Emoticon Letter

So what I basically took away from this article is that there is a lot of misinterpretation that goes with communication through writing. Which I sometimes feel is the result of lack of detail in the writing, or replacing an emoticon with what a person wanted to say and assuming the other gets the exact meaning of it.

In any case, my concept has to do with those old Dutch paintings where a wife is reading a letter from the husband who's away (symbolized by the painting on the wall) (remember Frances Brown's class?) Basically I wanted to play on that idea and change the letter from a loved one into a simple emoticon that represents love, yet without the romantic gesture.

  1. Inga, I love this! This is so funny! Her facial expression is PERFECT. She is NOT impressed.

I was thinking maybe to reiterate her disappointment, there could be wilted flowers on the table? Like on the left corner? I just see flowers that are droopy, and then I hear the "Wah wah wah" sound when something is disappointing. But I don't know if it's really necessary. I like the directness of the scene. Oh and make sure to crop in closer so that the negative space around her doesn't take away from the emoticon heart on the letter or her expression.

  2. Hilarious! I agree with Chelsea, you can afford to crop some of the negative space. I would draw the rest of the table behind her and run it off the page to fill that space. You can even make the painting on the wall bigger so it also runs off the page. All you really need is the boat to understand her husband is a sailor right. I can see this piece being tightly cropped around her so it's more intimate and all about her frustration with her spouse. Good stuff Inga :)

  3. I loved Frances Broun's Class. He was a peach.

I agree with most of the crits that have been said already. A closer crop would be stronger. Maybe used colour contrast to draw attention to the letter?

Are you going to do that Vermeer window off to the left lighting that you always see in those paintings? That would be really cool.

I can't wait to see it finished.

    Cheers,

    Jacquie

  4. Agreed with everyone. You could possibly add a chair backing to fill up some space, like those wooden kitchen chairs with some detailing.
